About Hearts
Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center was founded in 1985 to bring the healing power of horses to children and adults with special needs in Santa Barbara County.
What began over three decades ago with just a handful of riders and a few therapy horses has grown into a thriving nonprofit organization — one that has served thousands of individuals through the years.
Today, Hearts operates with a herd of carefully trained therapy horses, a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, and year-round programming that supports over 100 participants each year.
Over the years, we have remained committed to our founding mission: to inspire, strengthen, and motivate people of all ages and abilities through equine-assisted services. Serving the community for 40 years
1985: Hearts Therapeutic Equestrian Center is founded in Santa Barbara, California, with a focus on offering therapeutic riding to individuals with disabilities.
1985-1990: The center expands, attracting more volunteers and clients.
1990s: The center moves to a larger facility and develops additional therapeutic programs.
1999: The center is accredited by PATH Intl., allowing for greater recognition and growth.
2000s: Hearts diversifies its program offerings to serve veterans, children with autism, and individuals with mobility impairments.
2010: Major renovations are completed at the facility, including new stables and a sensory garden.
2015: The center celebrates its 30th anniversary and expands its community outreach and scholarship programs.
2020: Hearts adapts to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and sees an increased demand for outdoor services.
2021: Hearts moves to new facility after major capital campaign and facility renovation
2025: Hearts celebrates its 40th anniversary, reflecting on its growth and continued mission to heal lives through the power of horses.
